Weekly HCMG Newsletter for May 26 2009 Garden Walk Selections The 2009 Garden Walk Selection Committee visited a number of gardens that had been volunteered for the 2009 Garden Walk. The gardens selected for 2009 are those belonging to Marguerite Jones, Fran Henry, Dave Rusk, Helen Hyatt, and Pam Keene, with a bonus garden, the Gardens on Green. All but the Gardens on Green are located in South Hall, and all in relative proximity to each other. Garden owners will now be selecting a volunteer team leader for the team that will assist each owner in preparing their gardens for the show. Congratulations to those selected, and thanks to all that volunteered their gardens for consideration. Also, thanks to the selection committee for their efforts. Robbie McCormac is chairperson for the Garden Walk. Plant Auction Successful Our plant auction last week had a great selection of plants and garden-related items. Thanks to all who brought products to the auction. A special thanks to those that bought the products: over $1,500 was grossed. And the auction ended by 9:00 p.m.! Tissue Culture Workshop: Mixed Results The tissue culture workshop turned out to be more technical than most of the participants expected, so they were given the option of a full refund. Many took advantage of this, but those that remained for the second day were very grateful for the information shared by the presenter. We’ll attempt to be more on target with content next time. Thanks to Deloris Smith, Dorothy Krause, and committee for a great job of organizing the details for this event. Senior Center Project Completed The major re-work and landscaping of the gardens at the Gainesville Senior Center has been completed! Great job by all involved, but especially Hugo Kollmer, chairperson, and Mary Richards, who did the design work. Huge shrubs had to be removed first, the ground re-worked, and new plants added. Volunteers Needed: Junior Master Gardener Leadership Teams: We’re Expanding this great program: We are organizing JMG leadership teams for the 2008-2009 school year. If you would like to become a part of a team, please contact the Lovetts at williamllovett@bellsouth.net ASAP, or call if you have questions (770-532-3136). Please indicate in a 1-2-3 order your preference of schools. Also, if you have a “buddy” with whom you’d like to work, please indicate that as well. Because of the commitment of our members and that of teachers and parents, we are continuing and beginning new programs. A one-day leadership training workshop will be held this summer, and an alternate one will possibly be held in the fall. In addition to the programs at Chestnut Mountain, Lula, Martin, Mount Vernon, Sardis, Wauka Mountain, Myers, and Lakeview, there is interest from Centennial, Oakwood, and the World Language Academy. Plans to begin a program will not take place without a complete team of two or more HCMG’s, two or more teachers, and parental support. Commitments are needed now so that materials can be ordered and workshop plans can be made. Wilshire Park Wilshire Park workday will be this Thursday, May 29th beginning at 9:30 a.m. We will be doing some weeding and a little planting. We are usually done in 2 hours. Please bring your clippers, trowels, shovels, etc. Wilshire Park is off Pearl Nix behind Gainesville High School. Call Mary Wenger for directions, if needed. Rest rooms are available. Extension Office There is a continuing need for volunteers at the Extension Office. Please call Polly Reins at the office to schedule a half-day time slot.
