Weekly HCMG Newsletter for May 12 Annual Plant Auction and Monthly Meeting Next Tuesday: Our May meeting on Tuesday, May 20th, will be our annual plant auction. Bring plants, gardening tools, and garden art for other Master Gardeners and guests to purchase through auction. Please label plants. Location will be at the activities building at Chicopee Woods Ag Center on Tuesday, May 20. We’ll have a “Dollar” table for small miscellaneous items this year, as well. Please invite friends, neighbors, and family to participate in this exciting annual HCMG event. Members whose last names begin with the letters “N” through “R” please bring desserts or fresh veggies. Tissue Culture Workshop a Sellout! Deloris Smith announced that the Tissue Culture Workshop is a sellout. There is a “waiting list”, so let Deloris know if you are interested in attending. Deloris and Dorothy also need volunteers to help this Wednesday morning, May 14, beginning at 9:30 at the Extension Office, to assemble the “goodie bags” for the participants. If you can assist, let Deloris know. Ask a Master Gardener Volunteers Needed: Lake Lanier Association's annual meeting on Monday, May 19 is having an "Ask A Master Gardener" table. Of course, we need a 3 or 4 volunteers to handle this. The meeting starts at 6 pm and will go until about 8:30 pm. It will be at the Lakeview Center in Dawsonville. Dinner will be provided. Please contact Patsy Kilmartin if you can assist with this. pkilmartin@charter.net or cell at 770 714-9063. Ag Fun Day a Big Success! Over 350 kids aged 4, 5 and 6 attended this year’s Ag Fun Day at Jaemor Farms this past Friday. HCMG had a seed-planting booth, and other volunteers assisted as tour guides for the school groups. It was a great event to introduce children to various agricultural and natural resource activities. JMG Activities Day at Garden on Green: Under the super leadership of Kathy and Lee Lovett, several of our JMG school groups enjoyed an activities day at the new Garden on Green gardens at the Board of Education building this past week. Activities included planting of a butterfly garden, plant identification, and potting of plants for the picnic tables. This field day for JMG students demonstrated the great potential of the gardens we are putting there. Senior Center Project Progressing: Replacement plants are now being planted by our Senior Center volunteer team. More remains to be done, and the project has been expanded to include a kitchen garden. Contact Hugo Kollmer if interested in assisting with this project. You don’t necessarily have to be a senior citizen to assist. New on Our HCMG Website: Check it out: Photos from the 2008 Spring Garden Expo are now on our website. Thanks to Janelle Whalen for the photography. Garden Scenes Needed: The 2009 calendar committee is seeking photos of your plants for possible inclusion in the 2009 HCMG Calendar. If you have photos in digital format, please e-mail to Robbie McCormac.
