The Hall County Master Gardeners welcome you to their website.
Through this website you can learn more about the Master Gardener program, gain information regarding the many community activities and public events sponsored by the Hall County Master Gardeners, and communicate directly with the HCMG.
We're a proud organization of approximately 150 volunteers, growing in size and community impact each year as we add new events and activities, and new members, too. During 2007, we contributed over 16,000 volunteer hours to the Hall County community.
Our mission is to educate the public on gardening techniques and information. We do this through several methods:
One is our support of the Hall County Extension Service by providing volunteers to answer consumer questions regarding gardening, landscaping, and plant topics. If you call the Extension Service, it is likely that a certified Master Gardener will answer your call.
Two, we sponsor major events throughout the year that support gardening and provide education. One example is our massive Spring Garden EXPO, known as the "Greatest Two Day Plant Sale in Georgia". Over 25 plant growers and retailers, plus another 25 vendors of garden-related products, sell their products at the EXPO. And during the EXPO, Master Gardeners offer 20 free workshops to the public on a variety of gardening topics. Over 5000 people visited the 2007 EXPO. Other examples include the bi-annual Garden Walk tour of local Master Gardener gardens, the Fall Symposium with presentations by several noted garden experts, and the Fall Garden EXPO.
Three, we provide the "Ask a Master Gardener" booth at various public venues throughout the year.
Four, we contribute to the community with several public-service activities. Some of the 2008 projects include maintenance of a portion of the Wilshire Park Gardens, installation of a historical Cherokee Native American garden at the North East Georgia History Museum at Brenau University, a major landscaping project for the Hall County Board of Education headquarters, and landscaping for one of the Habitat for Humanity homes.
Five, sponsorship of the Junior Master Gardener Program at several area elementary schools. Over 120 students are currently enrolled in this exciting program for future gardeners.
The members of the Hall County Master Gardeners represent a diverse backgound of age, professional experinece, and interests. Many are retired, but many also are active in business or education. Some contribute hundreds of volunteer hours each year, and some only a few,. But they are all linked by a common interest in gardening, and the willngness to share that interest and their knowledge with the public. They like to have fun, too, and enjoy food and social interaction at their monthly meetings and many activities.
All in all, a great organization of people serving the local Hall County community.
